Becoming a registered nurse in Kenya

Passing your college exams is not what makes you a nurse. The Nursing Council of Kenya does — and the first deadline falls within your first two months of training.

Nursing is regulated end to end. The Nursing Council of Kenya approves the training institution, logs you personally as a student, sets the national exam, and issues the licence that makes practice legal. Miss a step and the qualification does not work — regardless of how well you did in class.

Step 1 — Indexing, within 60 days

When you are admitted, you must be registered with the NCK for an index number. The Council verifies that you met the admission criteria and issues a number that identifies you for the rest of your training and your career.

This is the step to get right. Indexing must be done within 60 days of the start of training. A student who has not been indexed is not acknowledged by the Council — not eligible to train, not eligible to sit the exam, not eligible to practise. It is done through the NCK online portal with the guidance of the college.

It is also why the Council can tell how many students an institution is training: indexing caps a college at its approved capacity. If a college is evasive about indexing you, that is a serious warning sign.

Step 2 — Train, and be assessed

Classroom blocks, skills-lab work and supervised clinical placements in approved facilities, across about three years.

Your clinical hours are not a formality. They are logged, supervised and required — the Council mandates supervised clinical practice as part of the programme, and your logbook is evidence.

Step 3 — The licensure examination

College exams qualify you to sit the national one. The NCK licensure examination is the real gate, and it is set nationally.

Step 4 — Registration and your practice licence

Passing the exam makes you eligible to register. Registration is what lets you work.

  • Apply promptly after results are released — the Council sets a window, so do not sit on it
  • You will need your national ID, your examination result slip and the prescribed fees
  • Depending on your cadre, an internship period may be required before full registration
  • Once registered you receive a practice licence, which must be kept current

A licence is not permanent. It is renewed, and renewal depends on staying in good standing with the Council. Every later step in your career — upgrading to a degree, working abroad, promotion — asks for a current licence, not a certificate from years ago.
